Why CPM matters for influencer campaign decisions
CPM (cost per mille, or cost per 1,000 impressions) is the lingua franca of media buying. Every paid social platform reports it. Using CPM to evaluate your influencer campaign puts it on the same scale as your paid media and lets you make a direct comparison: was the influencer reach cheaper or more expensive than the same reach in paid ads?
Why a higher influencer CPM is not always a problem
Paid social impressions are passive. An influencer's audience chose to follow them, actively watches their content and trusts their recommendations. This trust premium justifies a higher CPM. A $15 influencer CPM that converts at 3x the rate of a $10 paid CPM is actually 50% cheaper on a cost-per-acquisition basis. Always report both the raw CPM and the CPA alongside it.
When paid ads genuinely beat influencer on CPM
For broad awareness campaigns targeting millions at low frequency, paid ads scale more efficiently. A single mega-influencer at $40 CPM is worse value than targeted paid social at $10 CPM for mass market products. The sweet spot is combining both: paid for reach efficiency, influencer for conversion depth.
