What a fake follower audit checks

A complete fake follower audit looks at five signals:

1. Engagement rate versus follower count ratio. At the micro tier (10K-100K), a real engagement rate is 3-6% on Instagram. Below 1% for a micro creator is a strong fake follower signal. Above 10% can also be suspicious (engagement pod activity).
2. Follower growth history. Genuine follower growth is gradual with occasional spikes from viral content. Sudden vertical spikes (10,000 followers gained in a single day) without corresponding viral content suggest purchased followers.
3. Comment quality. Scroll the last 10 posts and read the comments. Generic comments ("Great post", emoji-only responses, compliments unrelated to the content) in high volume indicate engagement pod activity or purchased comments. Specific replies to the content indicate a genuine audience.
4. Follower account quality. Click through to 20-30 random followers. Accounts with no profile picture, no posts and a follower list of thousands indicate bot accounts. A follower base where 30%+ of clicked accounts look like this is a significant red flag.
5. Like-to-comment ratio. Real audiences on Instagram like posts at 5-15x the comment rate. A creator with 5,000 likes and 10 comments has a suspicious ratio that suggests purchased likes.
