What influencer platforms do not tell you in their sales demo
Every influencer marketing platform demo follows the same script. The search filters look clean. The creator profiles look rich. The dashboard looks intuitive. What you see in a 30-minute walk-through is the product at its best, on the best possible example data, with a trained rep who knows exactly which corners not to show you. Here is what they consistently leave out.
The database quality question nobody asks
Every platform will tell you how many creator profiles they have. Almost none will tell you what percentage of those profiles have been verified as real active accounts in the last 90 days. A database of 200 million profiles sounds impressive until you discover that 60% of those accounts have not posted in six months. Ask specifically: what is the active posting rate of creators in your database and how recently were they verified? If the answer is vague you have your signal.
The outreach open rate they will never show you
Platforms that include built-in outreach will demo the send flow. They will not show you their aggregate open rates or reply rates across the platform. The reason: most platform-sent outreach performs significantly below cold email because creators associate platform messages with bulk campaigns and have learned to ignore them. Ask for real open rate benchmarks from their outreach tool specifically. If they cannot provide a number they are not tracking it or the number is unflattering.

What happens to your data if you leave
Creator lists, outreach history, campaign notes, contact data - all of it lives inside the platform. Most demos never touch the topic of data portability. When you eventually want to switch or cancel, can you export every contact, every conversation and every campaign result in a format you can actually use? Ask for the specific export formats available and whether historical outreach threads are included. Some platforms make this deliberately difficult to increase switching costs.
The seat and unlock limits buried in the pricing
The headline price looks reasonable. The reality often involves per-seat charges above a base team size and unlock credits that run out mid-campaign. A $199 plan that limits you to 2 seats and 200 email unlocks a month is a very different product for an agency running 8 creators a week than the demo suggested. Before any demo ends, ask for a complete breakdown of what happens when you exceed any usage limit. The answer to that question tells you more about the platform than anything in the demo itself.

The six questions to ask before signing
One: what percentage of your creator database posted content in the last 60 days? Two: show me the real outreach open rate across your platform. Three: can I export all campaign data and creator contacts if I cancel and in what format? Four: what are the overage charges if I exceed seat or unlock limits? Five: is the price I see today guaranteed or can it change at renewal? Six: what is the minimum contract term and what is the cancellation process? A platform confident in its product will answer all six without hesitation.
